Integrated screen results – parking $2 CAD

Here are the numbers:

Open Spina Bifida 1:9170

Down Syndrome 1:4520 (less than that of a 15 years old)
Risk based on maternal age alone 1:719

Trisomy 18 1:77400

My OB said that because the 18 weeks detailed ultrasound was perfectly normal, we could add another “0” to all numbers. She strongly recommended not doing Amniocentesis.

We decided not to pursue amniocentesis any further since the risk for Down Syndrome seems to be very low.

18 weeks detailed ultrasound $7.25 CAD

BC Women’s Hospital parking $2.25 CAD
Ultrasound picture $5 CAD

Couple of interesting things about BC Women’s policies:

They don’t allow taking pictures during the ultrasound and won’t record the ultrasound for you. The only thing you can get is one picture.

They don’t reveal the baby’s gender until week 24 – this one was pretty shocking, especially since during the ultrasound we saw this huge thingy between the baby’s legs, but the technician wouldn’t confirm…

My DH later figured out that abortions in Canada are possible up until week 24. So it seems that in order to prevent people from doing "gender selection abortions", they do not declare the baby's gender prior to week 24.

Few days later my OB confirmed – it’s a boy. She said not to start buying anything gender related before we hear it twice from her, because she might be wrong...

Here is the little one:
